Doubts and mais duvidas...
I always thought I was the kind of person that didn’t care about what other people thought of the decisions I made in my life. If that is so then why do I find my myself feeling so scared and hesitant to be everything I am behind closed doors?

Frustration
I’m so frustrated right now because all I want is peace and quiet. I had it for maybe ten short minutes when I got home and then my roommate comes home with her friend and all I hear is stomping and slamming of doors and pots and pans and talking and laughing and more slamming and stomping. I don’t think they understand the meaning of peace. My head hurts from all the noise.

I’m having a hard time getting out if bed today. No class but so much to do. I need to get in the weight room and get stronger then I need to get on the track and get faster. Later I need o get to library to get smarter and then hop in the shower to get cleaner. Sounds like a good day to me.

AM Coffee
I’m sipping my morning coffee right now and i feel like the ballerina in the Folgers commercial. I didn’t have any coffee yesterday and I was miserable. Is this addiction?

Teach for America and the Fro
I’m about to graduate. And as I prepare to enter the “real” world (whatever that is supposed to mean), I wonder what I’m going to start doing with my hair. I wear it out most of the time but my dad always tells me that it needs to be tamed and slicked back because afros are “unprofessional.” I got my job for Teach for America with an afro. Yes, I went to my...

No track meet this weekend. I’m so excited to finally go home for the first time since winter break. I want to spend as much time with my family before I move to New Orleans in May.

Naturalista Takeover Mixer
The event was a success! It was great meeting sharing stories with other naturals on campus! I hope we can do this again.

The Talker and the Conversationist
To my brothers and sisters, this is an important lesson that needs to be learned.  Be weary of the people you meet in life that talk too much yet don’t listen. You will find the listener in the conversationist. There is a difference between the talker and the conversationist.

So you fell asleep in class again...
Do you find yourself always tired during the day even after you got over 9 hours of sleep the night before? Let me let you in on a little secret… Consistency is key. Now I’m no scientist (history and political science major) but I have found that the key to reducing drowsiness during the day is to be consistent about your bed time and wake up time. Go to bed at the same time every...

Athletes and Natural Hair
I’m starting to see more and more naturals at track meets. I love it. Last year the track was the one place where I felt alone after I did my BC because most people had relaxers or weave.  So many people tell me they don’t want to go natural because track makes their hair sweat out and if they straighten it then it will sweat out faster. I rock my afro every single day at practice. In...

New Balance Invitational
Today was a good day. Frigid, but good nonetheless. Went to the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in NYC with a few of my teammates and qualified for Big East. I’m a on a role so I can’t stop now. I’m not stopping until I get my 4x400 team to indoor nationals this year. I don’t get nervous anymore before my races which is good. I’m focused, driven and I run with a...

Working out with your natural
Working out and having a natural can be a pain in the butt. You have to wash it more often to get the dirt and salt out of your scalp but you also understand that it’s the middle of the winter and you don’t want to walk outside when it’s 20 degrees with wet hair. Here is what I suggest: Nighttime Routine Co-wash your hair in the evening after your workout or every 2-3 days  ...

Weight loss and good skin
It’s a 2 in 1 deal so you can’t go wrong with this.  Try substituting all your juices for water and you’ll notice a significant change in 2 weeks. Cut soda out completely (it gives you gas anyway so what’s the point).

Meditation
I went to my happy place after breakfast today. It was great.  You don’t have to be all professional with meditation just sit down on the floor. Put pandora on “nature” radio, close your eyes and go to your happy place. If you’ve never meditated before it can be a little awkward at first but after doing it a few times it’s easier to fall into that place relax. I do...

Start the day off right
It’s important to eat a hearty breakfast to get your metabolism going. Here’s what I had today: One boiled egg 2 slices of whole wheat bread and nutella Activia strawberry yogurt  Orange juice  Vitamins 1 cup of coffee I know it seems like a lot but I’m an athlete and I don’t eat that much during the day. I need that energy. S/N: For those of you that have...
